The aspect of the UCSD principles of community that I will research is sexual orientation
discrimination as represented in political aspects. The primary consideration is the 2008
California Proposition 8 and President Obama’s lack of support for same-sex marriage in the
United States. Proposition 8 was a Constitutional Amendment in California, which aimed to ban
same-sex marriage in the state (Judicial Council of California, 2023). According to the
amendment, only marriages between one woman and one man were not constitutionally
recognized. Under Barack Obama’s ruling in 2008, he made it known that he did not support
same-sex marriage (Miller, 2015). The president’s argument was based on his Christian views
and perspectives that prevented him from allowing society’s gay rights community to exist. The
