Patient safety is a priority in any healthcare setting. Falls remain among the most
prevalent patient safety issues, with approximately 700,000 to one million patients falling
annually in the United States (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2019). Falls can be
injurious or non-injurious. Over one-third of hospital falls are injurious, resulting in severe cases
of fracture or head trauma (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2019). Thus, the basis
of this paper is evaluating a fall risk assessment tool through the PICOT question: In hospitalized
patients, does implantation of the Schmid fall risk assessment tool decrease falls per 1000 patient
days over six months? This report analyzes two qualitative and two quantitative research articles
to gather evidence-backed insights about the clinical question. The paper covers the studies’
background, how they support the PICOT question, and the articles’ methods, results, and ethical
considerations. Other areas discussed include outcome comparison and proposed evidence-based
practice change.
