Global Strategies for Preventing and Managing Non-Communicable Diseases
NCDs are now among the greatest threats to public health since they claim more than 40
million lives every year worldwide (WHO, 2022). Examples of NDCs include cardiovascular
diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory disorders, and diabetes. Smoking, inactivity, unhealthy
dietary patterns, and excessive alcohol consumption are listed as key risk factors (World Health
Organisation, 2022). Many NCDs are much more prevalent in HICs than LMICs, where they
rarely occur. CVD is the most common cause of mortality due to NCD in HICs, while cancers
and chronic respiratory diseases come second and third respectively. The rise in death rates from
these diseases and a heavy burden of death from diabetes among others in LMICs (Allen et al.,
2017). In total, more than three-quarters of NCD deaths happen in LMICs.
