to the psychiatric nurse practitioner’s office by her worried parents, who were recommended for
psychiatric evaluation after Katie’s teacher raised concerns about possible Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The parents presented a report prepared by Katie’s teacher, which
showed symptoms of short attention span, poor performance in certain subjects, forgetfulness, and
inattention. However, Katie’s parents denied the presence of ADHD, stating that their child does
not display hyperactive behaviors or obstinate temper outbursts. Katie herself stated that she finds
school “OK” and likes subjects like “art” and “recess,” but most of the time, she feels bored and
“lost” in other subjects, resulting in her mind diverting during class time. She encounters times
when she does not remember what the teacher was discussing.
