A researcher is interested in the effect that headwear has on perceptions of whether a person is
a security risk at the airport. She takes pictures of a 35-year-old male with no hat, with a knit cap
pulled low on his forehead, and with a cowboy hat. Security workers (n=36] from the regional
international airport are randomly assigned to view one of the pictures and asked to rate how much
of a security risk they would consider the person in the picture. Ratings vary from 1= no risk to
10=high risk.
